My Approach

“The Unexpected Guest”

As I unexpectedly entered a Maasai house, I couldn’t help but think of The Unexpected Guest by Agatha Christie. For a brief moment, I imagined mystery or tension – but what I found instead was warmth.

The Maasai people were among the strongest and most resilient I met during my journey in Tanzania, yet equally kind and welcoming. This young woman, the fourth wife in her family, around 17 years old, was in her kitchen with her child. She prepared goat milk tea for me with quiet generosity.

While I sat there sharing that simple moment, I asked for her permission and took this photograph.

It was a moment of reaching a dream — and at the same time, returning from imagination to reality. I had finally arrived at the base camp of Ol Doinyo Lengai, known in Bengali as অগ্নিদেবের শয্যা,

Those who have read Chander Pahar by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay will understand the emotion behind this picture. For years, that mountain lived in my imagination. Standing there in real life felt surreal — like stepping into a story that once inspired me.

Some dreams stay in books. Some, if you are lucky, become real.

II had been cycling on a gravel road for two days, slowly running out of water. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, I saw a woman standing at a distance, looking at me with quiet curiosity. I tried calling her, but she didn’t come closer at first. I stood there for almost half an hour, tired and unsure.

By then I realized I was almost out of water.

Eventually, she understood. She came forward and offered me some water. It was such a small act, yet in that moment, it felt life-saving. We didn’t share a language, but we shared that moment and somehow, we became friends.

That’s what the road does. It strips life down to its raw form. It gives you uncertainty, vulnerability, and then unexpected kindness. These are the moments we go outdoors for the real, unfiltered experiences that the artificial world can never offer.

This photo may look like a simple, authentic moment from Maasai life in Tanzania, but there’s more behind it.

After I clicked the picture, the man approached me and started speaking in English. He agreed to pose, and I paid around $3 for the photograph. In many tourist areas, this has become common – if you take photos of tribal communities, payment is often expected. Sometimes, if you refuse, people may react negatively.

It made me reflect deeply.

Paying individuals for photos can slowly turn culture into performance. What looks natural online may actually be staged. When money becomes directly attached to every image, it risks creating dependency and distorting authenticity. Over time, this doesn’t support sustainable tourism.

Instead, I believe a better approach is contributing in more meaningful ways – supporting local schools, community projects, or NGOs. That way, tourism gives back without turning human identity into a transaction.

Not every photo tells the full story. And sometimes, the story behind the photo matters more than the image itself.
